Mining brought prosperity to many European regions during the 15th and 16th centuries. However, mining was dangerous, and the laborers’ health suffered from the cold, damp and dusty work environment. Eventually most workers became ill and many paid with their lives. Mining was often the only way to support their families, and the Knappen (miners) therefore continued to work the mines to extract the valuable ore.

Visitors to Knappenwelt Gurgltal in Tarrenz learn about the difficult but interesting methods of mining as it was done during the Middle Ages. Approximately 500 years ago, several mining regions were developed to extract the lead-rich galena ore in Gurgltal valley and its tributary valleys (stretching from the provincial capital of Imst to Fernpass). We demonstrate the mining processes from excavation methods in the tunnels, separation of slag and mineral, to producing goods. To show the work environment as well as the social life of the miners and their families, we constructed functioning replicas of crushing and smelting tools, built authentic ore hearths, office, blacksmith shop, mine house and miners’ barracks.

Learn about the fascinating life of mine workers and let yourself be inspired by the interesting history of Middle Age mining. We are looking forward to seeing you at the Knappenwelt Gurgltal!
